Chapter Seven

Charlie sat down at the bar in the kitchen when Dane prompted him to. “You must be hungry. You haven’t eaten anything for breakfast yet, have you?”

It was likely from Dane’s incredible sense of smell that he knew that. Likely he could also smell that Charlie hadn’t washed away the dried cum that was still on him from what they’d done last night.

That bit was embarrassing as fuck, and also a little itchy, but Charlie was actually a little glad for it.

“I guess I’m hungry, but it’s hard to think about food right now, you know?”

“Yeah,” Dane said. “I have a lot of explaining to do.”

Interestingly enough, he started to get into those explanations he felt were owed, all the while pulling out a carton of eggs from the fridge, along with milk, fruits, other vegetables, and cheese. He began to cook Charlie’s breakfast for him.

“Start off with any questions you like,” Dane said.

“I didn’t know you knew how to cook,” Charlie said, blurting it out. It was a good thing that Dane hadn’t put a number on the amount of questions that Charlie was allowed to ask, otherwise he would’ve wasted one.

Dane smiled at him over his shoulder, and he started shredding the cheddar and adding it to the eggs that were frying. “Werewolves eat a lot. You already know that, though, don’t you?”

Charlie nodded. “Yeah, my dad and brothers ate like horses. Mason still does. Marlia never ate as much as they did, but she never ate as little as I did either.”

“I noticed from last night,” Dane said. “Your appetite is more human.”

Charlie looked down, and his ears went back.

“That’s not a bad thing,” Dane said. “Don’t ever think that if I’m comparing you to a full-on human, that it means you’ve done something wrong.”

Charlie’s tail swished a little at those comforting words, and his wolf ears perked. “All right,” he said.

“As for the cooking, I’ve always liked it. Eating out is convenient when there’s no time, or when I don’t want to leave my room,” he said, grinning over his shoulder at Charlie in a way that made Charlie’s cheeks flame up. “But otherwise, it’s a good time for me to think. I can concentrate a little better when I’m focused on something else.”

“That makes sense,” Charlie said. He’d often done the same thing when he was having trouble with a problem in school. Thinking about something else and just zoning out in what could be a mindless task, like his chores, often helped him to see a little bit clearer.

Charlie then cleared his throat. Right. Now was the time to get into all the things that Charlie wanted to know. He was going to be brave about this and ask everything. He didn’t want to be in the dark about what his role was anymore. “You told Tanner that I was your mate. Is that true?”

Dane frowned and looked at him. It wasn’t an angry frown, but the kind that was confused. “Why would I lie to my beta about something like that?”

Charlie shrugged.
